23rd Annual Golf Outing another success

The Parker Brothers capture 2018 title

For the second straight year, weather fails to dampen the spirit of Cheltenham Little League

After listening to the weather prognosticators this week, the forecast for the 23rd annual CLL Columbus Day Ron Camp golf outing was golden. Nothing but blue skies and sunny warm weather … not!

At times, the golfers played in mist, with cool and damp conditions, but the bottom line, 27 groups of players teed off on Limekiln Golf Club’s Red and White nines in Ambler, Pa. and had a wonderful time.

Although there were winners of skill prizes and the overall title, the real champions of this event are the children and families of Cheltenham Little League and the community.

“This outing is so well run,” said Roger Farrell, a longtime participant at this event. “ We had a great time, took home some great prizes and enjoyed visiting with old friends.”

The key ingredient to this event is our sponsors and volunteers, and we had plenty of both. Once again, Comcast Business was our golf ball sponsor, as each player received a sleeve of balls in their goodie bags. Longtime CLL supporters Bruce Rangnow, Art Krevitz and Barandon & Hollinger made significant contributions to the cause. In addition, Len Garza, President of Premier Group Insurance, EZ Storage of Elkins Park and Lindinger’s Catering continued to help our cause.

Our volunteers were amazing.

Working the grill, which has been the norm for this event the past several years, were Kelly Durand and Kelly and Pru Rebitz, as they made cheeseburgers and hot dogs for the masses.

“So many people came up to me and said how much fun they had and they really enjoyed the food,” said Kelly Rebitz. “Everyone who picked up food mentioned that this is one of the best outings they participate in and that they are definitely coming back next year.”

In addition, Gail Chase, our volunteer coordinator, assembled some real talent, especially the 12 National Honor Society students from MaST Community Charter School. Not only did they help decorate the golf carts with signs, but they sold tickets for our raffle baskets.

Along with their tee gift and prize at the end of the day, each player also received a group photo, courtesy of Cheltenham Little League’s long-standing photographer JC Campoli. John and his wife Carol produced and framed each photo before dinner even started!

Even longtime golf writer Mike Kern was impressed. “This is a lot of hard work, but worth the effort. We needed more mulligans, but the commoradare, food and prizes were great”

The play on the course was equally impressive, as the Parker brothers came in with a score of 12-under-par 58 to win by one shot. Defending champions, Dave Schmidt, Dennis, Jim and Sean O’Brien finished second along with the group from Lloyd Sixsmith Sporting Goods.

Skill prizes were awarded to Scott Lynch and Doug Catts for straightest drives and Tom Brody and tournament namesake Ron Camp captured closest to the pin honors. All players received donated awards from Spikes Trophies.

For the seventh consecutive year, Dave Magagna and the Alcom Print Group produced our program at no cost, which was designed by longtime friend of CLL Jeff Reitzes. "Thank you for one of the best golf events ever," commented Magagna. "It is all about the people and you have a great group!" Please stop by the clubhouse to receive a copy and support our sponsors.

Once again, several members of the Cheltenham Community supported the foursome of Chief John Frye, Sergeant Jesse Tyler and Detectives John Barr and John Slavin from the police force.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the great support, help and dedication from our Board of Directors, as well as our outstanding golf committee. Ron Camp, Gail Chase, Michael Cornelison, Trish Feil, Tim Hassall and Bruce Rangnow deserve all the credit, as we pulled off another successful event.

I can’t wait till next year, so mark your calendar for Monday, October 14, 2019!

All the best and thank you,

Philip B. Sokol

CLL Board Member/Golf Committee Chairman
